1/22/13 — Week Three
We didn’t have class this week. We’re just continuing project 1. The comps are due next Tuesday. I’m finding this process to be a little difficult to get into. The color/type studies, sitemap/wireframes, then the comp. It’s slow going like I’m spending too much time on one thing (finding images: ARGH!). And it doesn’t help […]
Project 1 — Wireframes
For the wireframes I started with some quick thumbnails just to get ideas down. Every page needs the header (logo, social media icons, optional tagline), navigation (Menu, Catering, Specials, About), and the footer (sitemap & copyright). The homepage needs a large image, location/hours, a blurb about Eastside Bistro, brief information about specials/Happy Hour, and brief […]
Project 1 — Color
I feel like I’m a little slow in the process. Currently, I’m playing around with color. I’m doing my studies in kind of a mock-layout. This is not the wireframe — it’s just a generalization of a page…obviously. It helps me see how everything works, better than just laying colors side-by-side. I did a little […]
Project 1 — lots of stuff
There’s a lot to get done for the site. I have to find images of food which is way more difficult than I thought it’d be (subject-wise and quality-wise). I’m using one of my secret boards on Pinterest to keep everything together and keep track of where I’m getting the images. Looking through food images […]

Project 1 — inspiration
I’ve been looking at some other restaurant websites to get inspiration for the redesign. I want to see what other sites are doing and how. The Capital Grille Navigation: Menu, Wine, Private Dining, Locations, The Experience, Gift Cards, The Insider, New Locations slideshow of large images ‘Reserve Now’ button sub-navigation for menu Maggiano’s Navigation: Menu, […]
Project 1 — the old site
I decided to work on Eastside Bistro‘s website. There are a few things that I’ve noticed. navigation and site organization: the logo isn’t linked to the homepage ‘Menu’/’Calendar’/’Catering’ take you off the site (to .pdf files and a .doc file) ‘Events’ links to a .tiff image there are too many navigation options ‘Social’ is unnecessary […]
First project
The first project is a site redesign. I have to pick one of four restaurant websites (which are badly designed) and give it a better design. I’ll be looking at inspiration in the next few days. Hopefully I’ll work up some roughs as well.
1/8/13 – Week One
Starting the semester we talked about web design and how it differs from print design. The web has certain limitations. These need to be kept in mind when designing for it. Then we went over what you’d want from the client and a client brief. web vs. print Web RGB (hexidecimal) 72dpi devices: size, monitors […]
